    HHMI, Sunday Review, BEER

This was my last assignment of 2011! For HHMI, on the topic of brain channels and how they control our food cravings. Thanks again to Tida Tep and VSA Partners.

Here’s an illustration for the NY Times’ Sunday Review section, to accompany an article about the current state of social inequality in America. Big thanks to Alexandra Zsigmond for the great art direction.

I designed a label for a limited edition craft beer called “The Chairman”, created in celebration of Lumpen Magazine’s 20th anniversary. The beer is an imperial red ale brewed by Half Acre Brewery in Chicago, and I will confirm its deliciousness as soon as the rest of the case arrives. Thanks to Michael Freimuth for pulling me into the project.

The whole series! From left to right: Me, Michael, and Michelle Villasenor.

    Suburbs/Surgery

I have a piece in the Op-Ed/Letters section of today’s NY Times, about migration to and from cities and suburbs. You can read the online article here. Thanks to AD Devin Washburn.

Here’s an illustration for next month’s Cincinnati Magazine, about top doctors and joint replacement programs. Thanks to AD Megan Scherer - drawing a bunch of injured people turned out to be really enjoyable.

    PLANSPONSOR November

I have an illustration in this month’s issue of Plansponsor, and it looks like this:

(The prompt was “chatter”/”lots of people talking”.) Thanks again to SooJin Buzelli.

    Recent faves (favorites)

I have some spots in the newest issue of Lucky Peach, a food magazine published by McSweeney’s. Each one is a different type of miso, characterized by their descriptions - “Miso Sweet”, “Miso Funky”, etc. And of course, they had to sneak in “Miso Horny” at the last minute. Pick up a copy if you’re into food/art/magazines, it’ll be worth your $$ (money). Big thanks to Chris Ying for the commission.

I made an illustration for this month’s Fast Company, about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Pretty straightforward. Thanks to AD Alice Alves.

Here’s a piece that just went up on ecomagination, a proactive environmental website by GE. This one was about turning food waste into energy. You can read the article here. Thanks to Jennifer Lee and the team at frog.

I was recently in a show at Spoke Art called “Bad Dads”, where artists had to make pieces inspired by Wes Anderson movies. I made three small prints based on the three villains from The Fantastic Mr. Fox - Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Thanks again to Ken Harman for the invite.

And lastly, it’s donut day! I love my studio.

    Bad Luck Club

I have a couple of pieces in an all-girl group exhibition opening tonight at Myplasticheart in the Lower East Side, NYC. The name of the show is Bad Luck Club, and it is curated by the amazing Aya Kakeda. Here’s a small write-up on my pieces. The opening will go from 6-9pm with an afterparty to follow. Hope to see you there!

Art of Science / NYT / HHMI

I’m participating in an upcoming book called The Art of Science, a collaboration between artists and scientists. Each artist was given a scientific blurb to illustrate - mine was “What controls rain?” Huge thanks to Julia Rothman for the invite. It’s being released next fall, published by Chronicle Books. More details then!

Here is a quick Letters illustration for today’s NY Times, on the subject of whether or not the actions of individuals can actually make a difference on the environment.

Forgot to post this earlier - illustration for last month’s HHMI Bulletin, for an article about high school science. Thanks to Tida Tep, Jennifer Lee and VSA Partners for this one.

    NEW STUDIO

I finally broke down and moved into the Pencil Factory. So far, it’s been great. Not only do I love the space, but I am also surrounded by an amazing group of people and all the water I can drink. Life improvement, check.

    Summer’s over, back to Tumbling

Some bits and pieces. Yesterday I did some quick lettering work for the nice folks at YCN, to be included in an animation pitch for NSPCC. The theme of the project was “bullying”, and they needed some harsh words illustrated in context. See below! Thanks to Nick Defty, this was great lettering practice for me.

I’m in a group exhibition hosted by Raw Design Studio, in celebration of their 5th birthday. The theme was “Birthday”. Show opens today in Salford, UK. Here is the website for the event, along with all the contributors. Thanks to Ruth Watson for the invite.

Last month I released a poster with the fantastic 1200 Posters, a year-long print series that focuses on collaboration and community. Each artist is given a piece of text from the Margaret Wheatley poem, “Turning to One Another” to work with. This is such a great project, and I can’t wait to see the series complete. Big thanks to Greg and Robyn and the Big New Ideas team. Go support them with your blogs and wallets!
