Happy 2013! I’m taking advantage of this post-vacation pre-stress haze to put up some work from the end of the year. Below is a piece about jazz for The New Yorker.

I illustrated a song for Beck’s new Song Reader - a beautiful package of sheet music designed and published by McSweeney’s. Big thanks to Walter Green and Jordan Bass for including me in such an awesome group of artists. The album is unrecorded, inviting people to play and interpret the songs themselves. Here are a few examples!

I’m also part of this year’s Sundance Film Festival A to Z book, designed by Todd Oldham Studio. Every artist had to illustrate a letter, which represented different films, actors/actresses, and directors. My letter was S - Secretary, Slacker, and Steven Soderbergh.

For Fast Company: 7-11 stores in Indonesia including outdoor seating, cafes, and live music to accommodate the interests of locals. As a result, it has become a popular pick-up spot.

Quick Letters piece for the NY Times, about a woman’s choice to freeze her eggs.

Even quicker Bloomberg View piece - Malala Yousafzai’s shooting and the current state of Pakistan.

And something a little lighter - a woodcut of cats! This was my half of an art swap (which also doubled as a going-away present) for my friend Alex Barrett. The inspiration came from this and this.

I made a spot for the latest issue of The New Yorker. Very straightforward blurb about the new LCT3 Claire Tow Theater at Lincoln Center, keeping prices low at $20 to maintain accessibility. Thanks to AD Jordan Awan for the commission. Drawing all these little attendees really helped me blast through my audiobook.

I made a poster for this year’s Penfield Croquet Ball! The original is a diorama, composed of wood, paper and ink. Thanks to the folks at Cramer-Krasselt for the call, and the amazing Sam Weber for helping me shoot the final piece.

I’m a little late to post this, but here is an illustration for the latest issue of The Manual. The essay that accompanies this piece is about drawing influence from the past to create something new. Not stealing but openly borrowing, ultimately arriving at a piece of work that carries the echo of its predecessor. Big thanks to Jez Burrows for the commission!

Intel SciArt Series

I recently got to make an illustration for Intel’s SciArt Series - a very awesome collaboration between artists and the scientific breakthroughs featured at ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). The project I was paired with focuses on monitoring debris flow from natural disasters. This is done through buried sensors that detect changing moisture levels in soil. And the sensors are composed of accessible and low-cost materials - recycled facial masks! You can read more about it here. Thanks to Mikell and Christopher at Noise for the great art direction.

Still working on this tumbling business. Here is a smattering of things:

I drew these little guys for the latest issue of aiCIO. The prompt was “Angry mob. Crowd ready to fight”.

I recently worked on a series of print ads called “Recycle Your Electronics”, sponsored by Ontario Electronic Stewardship. Thanks to the awesome folks at Juniper Park, who also took care of all the type and finishing touches, aka 80% of the ads.

Here’s a full-pager for Retail News, about the “new consumer” and their top shopping priorities - friendly service, mobile sites, etc.

Quickie for The NY Times’ Letters section: reactions to the idea of financing education through equity rather than debt. You can read the full article here.

This was for the latest migration-themed issue of GOOD Magazine. The article was about the current state of migration in the US, or lack thereof. Originally titled “The Migrant’s Manifesto”.

And finally, a spot of sad news. My cat has moved to California! For at least the next few months. I will miss him dearly.

Fab Print Launch

I am selling prints through Fab Europe this week! The campaign launched today, and will last through Saturday, June 2nd. There are 21 pieces to choose from. Unfortunately for my American friends, these prints are only available to European countries. But here are a few images, including new work, old work, and re-worked recent work!

I’ve recently been getting more calls to do quick pieces, which is always a great balance of stress and satisfaction. Here’s one for today’s Bloomberg View, to accompany an article about how the Republican Party should proceed in trying to win over more women voters. Elephant + wig = conceptual. Thanks to AD Phil Lubliner and the guys at Other Means.

And this is one for the NYT Op-Ed page, to accompany a first-person account of a teacher who received vague threats from a student, in the wake of the Ohio shooting. Great art direction from Matt Dorfman.

Some small updates:

Here’s a new Letters illustration for the NY Times, about nuclear power plants being a necessary source of electricity. I always cringe when I see words like “nuclear” and “healthcare” in an assignment, but this one worked out rather well.

I drew a bunch of floating food for Ecomagination, for an article about a nearly package-free grocery store opening up in Texas.

Crazy digital cake pops for O Magazine. (Do people actually make these?)

I just received these lovely cards from Urban Graphic, as part of their Toasted collection. This was part of an image I had made sometime last year - which worked surprisingly well cropped. Thanks to Aurelia Lange for having a good eye for pattern.
